we actually use something called an “iron filing discovery disk” that we’ve nicknamed a “ghost etch-a-sketch”
it’s a sealed plastic disk with iron filings inside. we give ti a good shake to even it out, put it down, and take a picture of it. at the end of the investigation, take another picture and compare.
we’ve had lines and squiggles in them. is it paranormal? I don’t know. but it’s interesting.

also, the “magna-doodle” style boards use iron filings suspended in a white liquid…when a magnetic field comes close to the top the filings are pulled into view. when you erase, you’re just drawing the filings to the back side. I have one that I picked up in the toy aisle of the dollar store that’s about 4X6 inches.
