Ouija Boards – Where did they come from?

by Terri J. Garofalo on January 14, 2010 at 5:05 am
Posted In: Entities Blog

I have to credit paranormal comedian Mike Brody for digging this one up. The conference he was at last weekend sported an exhibit of Antique Ouija boards collected by Robert Murch.

Murch is probably the foremost collector of Ouija there is. He was inspired by the movie Witchboard back in the 1980s. He began his collecting with his first in 1993. Since then he’s been uncovering all sorts of unique versions to add to his collection. He consults with film makers concerning spirit  boards. He also is responsible for retracing the origins of Ouija through the history of its inventor, William Fuld.

Murch has created http://www.williamfuld.comwhich is the most comprehensive collection of Fuld’s work, including not only Ouija boards, but other parlor games he manufactured and sold. This is the place you can find accurately researched facts about Ouija… the rumors and legends surrounding it have been off the deep end in the reality department. Murch sets us straight. His contact with Fuld’s descendants help clarify the origins of this infamous parlor game.

Talking boards, spirit boards, oracle boards, witch boards have been around in different incarnations since the mid-1800s. The first patent for such a device was filed in London England in 1854 by Adolphus Theodore Wagner for “PSYCHOGRAPH, OR APPARATUS FOR INDICATING PERSONS THOUGHTS BY THE AGENT OF NERVOUS ELECTRICITY”.  There was no mention of spirits being the communicators. It was believed the mind of the operator created the messages, subconsciously I suppose. The talking board showed up in America in 1890.

Ouija was a Kennard Novelty product. The patent was originally obtained by Elijah Bond in 1891. It was later assigned to Charles Kennard and William H. A. Maupin. It was Fuld that made it big once he took over the company. He was falsely credited at Ouija’s inventor; however, his marketing efforts cemented it in the world of spirit boards as number one.

You can learn the history of Fuld and his inventions at http://www.williamfuld.comAlso, check out Robert Murch at http://www.robertmurch.com/.

It’s interesting stuff!

Psychics… Evidence?

by Terri J. Garofalo on January 13, 2010 at 6:13 am
Posted In: Entities Blog

There’s a lot of debate amongst the ghost hunter crowd whether or not psychic impressions are valuable evidence. Granted, you can’t declare their findings scientific. What they do is very tough for science to put a wrapper around.

The great Hans Holzer, daddy of all paranormallers, said that paranormal investigation is worthless without a psychic medium on board. Their insight can assist the process and hopefully open a communication line with any spirits involved in a haunting.

Can you declare this evidence of a haunting? Scientifically, no. A psychic is really more of a useful tool in furthering the study. There will always be arguments surrounding psychic impressions: are they influencing the investigation in a false way; is the psychic influenced by information?

There is value here, particularly when you are faced with helping a client sort out his/her experiences and putting a stop to disturbing activity.

Should we use psychics on investigations? Yes. They are great signposts for pointing out activity. If communication occurs, any evps or physically documented phenomena will substantiate the psychic finds. Yes, they are useful. So, why get hung up about it?

Portals between the dimensions…

by Terri J. Garofalo on January 11, 2010 at 4:07 am
Posted In: Entities Blog

Some places that have a plethora of spirit activity are often said to be a portal to other realms, or the other side.  How anyone will be able to prove this, scientifically, I have NO IDEA… It’s one of those things that people have given a description to that isn’t fully understood.

Psychics will often sense an open gateway where the veil is apparently thin and spirits can pass into the physcial realm. One of the investigators on my team, who happens to be a medium, lives in a home with a portal that becomes extremely active sometimes. She gets many different entities traveling through there. Perhaps she’s there as sort of a traffic cop at the light? …snicker.

I have yet to see proof of these portals, but I do not doubt such things exist.

Today’s comic is a bit of a guess on how a portal might be perceived on the astral plane. In this case, a chance to slip down from heaven and make the lives of the living a little hellish just for the fun of it. Pehaps when I cross over, I’ll come back for an occasional hoot-nanny.

The Complete Approach, Provocative Cartooning & Other Random Thoughts

by Terri J. Garofalo on January 9, 2010 at 7:41 am

The Complete Approach & Guest Draws

Today’s cartoon includes the recent book by Barry FitzGerald and Dustin Pari of Ghost Hunters International TV show, The Complete Approach. It’s a comprehensive guide to the paranormal and how to investigate it. I’ve read it and I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the subject, including those who have been investigating for a long time. You can nab this jewel here: http://www.completeapproachbook.com/

Also, I’d like to alert the media that Shannon Sylvia, paranormal investigator, TAPS member and Ghost Hunters International personality has agreed to Guest Draw again. This one was in honor of her birthday back in December… Which, the rate I go, I never get my cards out on time, so here it is! Look for it tomorrow! Coming soon is Britt Griffith, Brandy Green and a host of others.

Provocative Cartooning… Freedom of Sketch

On Twitter, I hooked up with Liza Donnelly, New Yorker cartoonist. She posted a link to an article she had written about the freedom of cartooning “speech” (sketch? <my term…). I am providing that link here:

http://dscriber.com/home/980-a-few-thoughts-on-provocative-cartoons-from-a-cartoonist.html

She discusses the issue of Kirk Westergarrd, the Danish cartoonist who created quite a stir with a series of cartoons about Mohammad that offended the heck out of the Muslim community. (That’s easy to do, I’ve gotten myself into some hot water – innocently, I might add. Fortunately, I lived to tell the tale and my Muslim friends stood by me snickering…) The question is, should we cartoonists continue to tackle such dicey issues?

My opinion is “who wants sanitized cartoons?!” Personally, I prefer to be respectful with my pen. That is why I communicate with someone over a “Guest Draw” to get their approval. I prefer to honor those I write about. That doesn’t mean I won’t set fire to a hot issue… My responsibility as a cartoonist is to point things out and hopefully get folks to see the irony or humor in it.

Liza puts it well,

“My feeling is there is a better middle ground: a way to bring to light issues such as extremist wrongs, anti-immigration sentiments, and censorship, without being in-your-face about it. Cartoons can impart difficult messages, and should. That’s the beauty of cartoons — their graphic strength can communicate uncomfortable ideas to different cultures in a breath.”

Random Thoughts, Things… thoughts are things!

Wine Review!

I haven’t done a wine review in quite some time. Since I just discovered a wonderful inexpensive wine find, I’ll share. My goal when I wine shop is to find something palatable for a good price… and hopefully a really cool and amusing label. Yes, I often shop for a label for it often adds a bit of conversation to a gathering on top of a fine vino experience. This next wine was unexpected and exceptional (and has an attractive label, though a non-funny one).

CUVÉE de PEÑA 2006
red wine: 48% Grenache, 30% Carignan, 22% Syrah
Vin de Pays des Pyrenées Orientales

This lovely wine hails from the Cooperative winery in Cases de Pene, a small village in Southern France and is actually under $10! It is a blend of some wonderful grapes. Blends are underestimated. Often they are far richer and more interesting than a single grape wine.

This particular experience sends you to the villa in So-France looking out over acres of gnarly vines from a balcony where you share the smokey tannins with platter of well aged assorted cheeses from the region. The sensation of blackberries crosses your palate… Does it form from the bushes that are berry laden on the edges of the vineyard? Or is it the essence implanted by very juxtaposition of vines and berries in the growing of the grapes themselves?

Take those thoughts with you when you try this one.

I was going to insert more random thoughts, but they are so random one might consider me appropriate for loony bin containment.

So, this is it for now!

Eat Cookies, Hunt Ghosts, all with a good wine!
