The Art of the Guest Draw

by Terri J. Garofalo on September 3, 2010 at 8:08 am
Posted In: Entities Blog

Last night’s discussion with Paranormal Underground on Z-Radio with Karen and crew wended its way around to the Guest Draw concept. I assume everyone knows the story behind this, but I’m not so arrogant that I don’t realize you all don’t live inside my head… which is a good thing! You’d all be fried insane in that Vulcan stew-pot of ideas.

If you listened to the show last night or have been watchin’ my frantic Twitter posts, you’ll know the idea faucet has been wide open and I’m a bit overwhelmed. There’s a huge pile of post-it notes and napkins with thoughts jotted all over. The windows are open this morning and I expect a breeze to discombobulate the entire stack. (I spelled discombobulate right! WooHOO! Spell check needs to recognize “WooHoo”…)

Segue to topic: The Guest Draw came out of a conversation on Twitter with Brian Harnois. As a joke I asked if he’d like to “star” in Entities-R-Us. He jumped at the idea. So, I did a couple character studies (which he still uses on his website), then drew a comic. At the drawing stage, I thought it would be a hoot to call it a “Guest Draw” as opposed to a “Guest Star”… the comic is after all, 2-dimensional. The Guest Draw was born.

Some time after that I was in contact with Barry FitzGerald of Ghost Hunters International, SyFy with a separate issue. I threw out the Guest Draw thing. He too went for it. Barry must have liked it well enough as he asked me to illustrate his and Dustin Pari’s next book. That should be coming out soon.

Guest Draws came out of the woodwork with Shannon Sylvia, the Klinge Brothers, Josh Gates, Zak Bagans, the ENTIRE GHI crew, etc… I have given up on seeking permission as it is tough to contact some of these folks. I’m reluctant to draw someone if they are not keen on it. I’m not out to offend, or discredit anyone. I’d rather lightheartedly show their amusing personality traits that endear them to the public. Who wants to be portrayed with horns? …that might be a really funny idea though. Hmmmm. Feel free to draw some fan art of me with horns! I would respond well to that!

I was asked last night, are some people hard to draw? Who were the easiest to draw? Let me set the record here… I’m not “Rembranting” people here, so my renderings are not perfect character sketches of facial attributes. What I draw is the personality in simple form. It’s like a gesture of character that is just recognizable in posture and expression mostly.

It is easy to draw someone with an outward personality, one who exudes a particular persona. Some of my favorite draws have been Josh Gates, Zak Bagans, Dustin Pari, Brian Harnois, Grant Wilson… and Sunday’s Guest Draw Jeff Belanger!

When I’m faced with a more elusive closed personality – the quiet type, it becomes a challenge. Some of my more difficult draws have been Jason Hawes, Barry FitzGerald (though I’ve gotten to know Barry better to sketch him spot on at this point). These folks don’t wear their hearts on their sleeves, they don’t offer up as much as they observe the world. So, drawing them requires me to peer inward, invading their space to some extent. Since I’m not one to be a “space invader” it’s a little uncomfortable. However, I dive right in and usually come up with an acceptable rendition. So far no one has japped me out in a dark alley with a sack full of pennies…

Guest Draws are great for the fans, the celebs and the comic strip. I get requests all the time to draw fan favorites. Some of the stars will ask me. I’m not adverse to drawing regular people into my comics either. What makes a cartoon work is the humor, you don’t have to be famous to pull it off. It’s an even playing field. I have used Guest Draws to help promote events for some. And, they also draw in readership for the comic strip. It’s “Shameless Marketing” at it’s best – everyone has fun, everyone gets something worthwhile out of it. As I always say, it’s about paying it forward and sharing.

AND THAT is the Guest Draw story.

DON’T MISS JEFF BELANGER in Sunday’s Guest Draw Slot in honor of his new book release, Legend Tripping.

SPEAKING OF GUEST DRAWS – THIS IS THE LAST WEEK FOR JOSH GATES T-shirts, Mug and Poster! I will be switching to Dustin Pari on the 15th. Order today! http://www.cafepress.com/ERUGuestDraw

Komodo Dragon Dreaming…

by Terri J. Garofalo on September 1, 2010 at 7:48 am
Posted In: Entities Blog

Hardly the California Dreaming I’d like to be doing… I managed to conjure up a real wacko dream last night. I found myself climbing into the passenger seat of my “Destination Truth Vehicle”, noticing there was a young Komodo dragon on my floor mat. I proceeded to kick it out of the car. Yes, I was nervous about getting bit, but I nudged it along anyway. The darned thing took off into the bushes. I continued to watch out for it.

WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN? Dreams often have definable meanings to them. So, this mornin’ I busily set about freaking out Google for answers.

Aside from the obvious of signing up for Destination Truth – SyFy, the dragon has much meaning in many spiritual mansions.

Dragons are symbolic of wisdom. They guard treasure. They freak people out. They burn the pants off those who get too close… I swat at bees (gently of course, don’t want to injure them), so why not kick a dragon?!

This interpretation I picked off of “Dream Dictionary and Interpretation” http://www.experienceproject :

“To dream of a dragon, denotes that you allow yourself to be governed by your passions, and that you are likely to place yourself in the power of your enemies through those outbursts of sardonic tendencies. You should be warned by this dream to cultivate self-control. [57] See Devil.”

SWEET! ….  Of course, I do cultivate self-control as my patience can run a little thin at times.

Dragon Articles from http://www.cdot.org/history/dragon_articles.htm says this:

“The Chinese Dragon, or Lung , symbolizes power and excellence, valiance and boldness, heroism and perseverance, nobility and divinity. A dragon overcomes obstacles until success is his. He is energetic, decisive, optimistic, intelligent and ambitious.

Unlike the the negative energies associated with Western Dragons, most Eastern Dragons are beautiful, friendly, and wise. They are the angels of the Orient. Instead of being hated, they are loved and worshipped. Temples and shrines have been built to honor them, for they control the rain, rivers, lakes, and seas.”

This makes more sense… Ironically, I was wrestling with the word “courage” last night. The daunting task of bringing this comic strip to the next level (writing press releases, kits etc… major promo plans, plus new ideas in the works – a hot bed of insanity for me) has left me a little drained. Realizing I need to be courageous and move forward with this all; so, my higher self dropped in this dream for encouragement.

Perhaps I should not kick dragon, but embrace it? Interesting concept. I guess I need to buy a bunch of chickens and brandy to feed it. Too bad I live in a wooden house!

Now that you’ve had insight into my sorry head, please don’t run away. I am virtually harmless… most of the time. 😉 It’s definitely interesting to work out one’s personal issues on a public blog. Sheesh!

Anyone else have some interesting dreams to share?

Josh Gate Fan Site…

Amanda Rosenblatt is the ringleader for the Official Josh Gates, Destination Truth Fansite. This one: http://joshuagatesfan.weebly.com/

She manages this enormous undertaking with her “Gaga-esque” style and energetic wit. She has even managed to make it into an Entities-R-Us, Guest Draw with Josh… talk about gate crashing! Sheesh! Guess I’m not strick about who sneaks in the back door.

Anyway, including Amanda has it’s perks… In her Vlog Entities-R-Us gets a cameo role showing the official Josh Gates Guest Draw Mug purchased by Amanda this month.

Have a view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glBjYImvShs

Yes, Amanda’s a hoot… reminds me of how crazy I was in the day… (Later part of the Jurassic period.) Of course, I’m still nuts. So there is no hope for her. Oh well. If you are a dedicated Gates fan… or DT fan, make sure you check out her fan site. It’s well done.
